My New Shadow

Tonight as I was giving Annaliese her nighttime bottle her room was lit softly with her butterfly night light.  I looked around at the light purple color that Justin and I had picked out and painted ourselves (with the help from Uncle Ashley and Aunt Jenn).  I saw the multiple purple butterfly decals on her walls, the personalized shelves (again courtesy of Aunt Jenn) and the maternity pictures that we had taken and were signed by our family and friends that attended both of our baby showers.  Then as I put the empty bottle down on the bookshelf and stood up with her in my arms to walk toward her crib,  on the wall in front of me I saw my new shadow.  A silhouette of a mother holding a sleeping babe lay in front of my very eyes.  I found myself lost in another moment where time stood still.  Since Anna came into my life I never really realized that even my shadow had changed.
As a kid it was always fun to play with our shadow.  Heck, even now I still play with my shadow and tease our cat with shadow puppets.  Even at age 28, my shadow still likes to play!  Stepping over cracks in the sidewalk.  Jumping in puddles!  Waving "hello"!

Just like my favorite stuffed animal (Yes mom and dad, I'm referring to "Re" the raccoon), my shadow has been with me since I was born.  She's been there with me through thick and thin from coast to coast and back again.  And all this time she has never seen herself as a mom, until tonight.  As you all know, you need some light for anything to have a shadow.

I have found my permanent light along with my new permanent shadow.

 My dad has always told me that nothing in life is permanent except change.  Well I believed that until today.  I will always be a mommy.  And that will never change.

Linking up with Alison and Galit for Memories Captured

    My Shadow

    From A Child's Garden of Verses by Robert Louis Stevenson

    I HAVE a little shadow that goes in and out with me,
    And what can be the use of him is more than I can see.
    He is very, very like me from the heels up to the head;
    And I see him jump before me, when I jump into my bed.

    The funniest thing about him is the way he likes to grow—
    Not at all like proper children, which is always very slow;
    For he sometimes shoots up taller like an India-rubber ball,
    And he sometimes gets so little that there’s none of him at all.

    He hasn’t got a notion of how children ought to play,
    And can only make a fool of me in every sort of way.
    He stays so close beside me, he’s a coward you can see;
    I’d think shame to stick to nursie as that shadow sticks to me!

    One morning, very early, before the sun was up,
    I rose and found the shining dew on every buttercup;
    But my lazy little shadow, like an arrant sleepy-head,
    Had stayed at home behind me and was fast asleep in bed

    1. I love this poem! I had never heard of it before :) Thanks for the comment and for sharing!
